About the Item

This interesting figurative landscape oil painting is by British artist Norman Toll. He liked to paint well populated scenes with an event or activity as the focus. Painted circa 1955, the composition is a busy London construction site with numerous workmen and on lookers in the foreground. Beyond, on the scaffolding of a building reads Steelwork by Robinson. A red London bus is in the background. A colourful active scene and an excellent example of Toll's work. Provenance. Cardiff estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 43 inches by 35 inches and in good condition. Norman Toll (1932-2014). Formerly Art teacher at Oriel High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College. As well as teaching Toll continued to pursue his passion as an artist. Toll produced oil paintings of the Great Yarmouth area, often crowded figurative scenes such as Britiannia Pier and the Marching Band. He died aged 82.

    A stunning 1891 exhibited oil painting by British listed artist George Sherwood Hunter. This is a glorious British Impressionist painting from his travels in Northern France. It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections. Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891. Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a fine Barbizon gilt gallery frame, 40 inches by 30 inches framed. Gallery condition. George Sherwood Hunter (1846-1914) - was born in Aberdeen in Scortland on 30 May 1846. He first visited Newlyn in the 1890s, staying at Belle View in 1897. In 1902 he settled at the Malt House, Newlyn, with his wife Constance. Hunter had a studio in Bateman’s Meadow, where the Forbes School of Painting was situated, and Hunter assisted with tuition at the School in its early days. Karl Müller was born in Hamburg-Altstadt in 1865. His wealthy Jewish parents Abraham Müller (1832-1896), citizen of the Hanseatic city since 1869, and Henriette "Jette", b. Burchard (born 1832 Neubuckow / Mecklenburg), had a cigar factory at Spielbudenplatz 5 in St.Pauli. When Karl Müller was ten years old, next to factory and warehouse, now at Speersort 11 (Altstadt), there was also a branch in Altona-Ottensen with the address Am Felde 68. The family lived at the time at Pferdemarkt 13 (Old Town). After attending the Jewish Foundation School at the Zeughausmarkt, Karl Müller completed a three-year lithography apprenticeship. From 1886 to 1888, he studied at the Royal Saxon School of Applied Arts in Dresden with the history and decoration painter Donadini, then with Professor Hanke of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. Karl Müller's painting style was conventional-realistic and did not follow modern trends. In 1891, the oil paintings "Preparation for the Service", "In the guardroom", tattoo", "gymnastics lesson", "covert patrol” and "return from the field service exercise”, whose main motive almost always soldiers formed.In 1893, he painted the" invasion of the 76er " as a horizontal format in black and white, the painting was acquired by the Museum of Hamburg History in 1930.
